FSP Everest 80Plus 700 Watt Modular Power Supply

Fortron Source (FSP) is a well known PSU manufacturer, often manufacturing power supplies for OCZ and other companies.  They have entered the retail market with their own brand name and they are beginning to offer enthusiast class power supplies.   Today, we are going to take a look at the Everest 80Plus 700 Watt, which is a 700 Watt power supply that features modular connections.  This power supply also boasts two PCI Express power connectors, an 80 Plus certification, SLI Ready for Dual 8800GTS', Dual 8800GT's, or Dual 7950GX2's, along with an efficiency rating of up to 85%.

Upon opening the box, you will find the manual, black colored screws, power cable, some velcro straps, and a FSP case badge.

Here are some of the main features and specifications from the box:

  • Active PFC with Ultra High Efficiency (up to 85%)
  • Modular Cable Management
  • Active PFC
  • SLI Ready
  • Energy Saver uses 1 Watt in Standby Mode
  • Super Low Noise 0dB when a load less than 20% is used. Silent Guard
  • 3 Years with up to 6 Years Extended Warranty
  • Blue LED On/Off Switch
  • Full protection features with SCP, OVP, OCP, OPP, OTP

The Power Supply:

The power supply features a matte blue housing, which looks great.

Looking at the side of the power supply, there is an FSP label with their logo on it, the model number and a condensed specification list.  Note that there are four +12v rails, with each rail supplying up to 18A, which is good for peripherals requiring more power. It is also RoHS compliant.

There is an large grill on the back which allows the 120mm fan to exhaust hot air, an on/off switch with a blue led light and AC Power Input.  This power supply does feature Active PFC, so there is no need for a  switch to select the input voltage.

-A blue LED indicates that the power is switched on

This power supply features the following cables:

There are a total of eight modular plugs, two for PCI express, three for Serial ATA, and three for Molex/Floppy connectors.

-A 24-pin ATX power connector with removable 4 pin for backwards 20-pin compatibility.

-A 4 pin CPU +12v Power Connector

-A 8-pin CPU +12v EPS Power Connector

-1x  6 + 2 Pin PCI-Express Power Connector and 1x 6 Pin PCI Express Power Connector

-6x Molex Power Connectors with a grip to allow easy removal from devices

-9x Serial ATA Power Connectors

-1x Floppy Power Connector

Cooling:

There is a 120mm fan on the bottom of this power supply.  During testing, at idle loads, this fan is quiet and is off most of the time, when it needs to cool, it emits only a slight whirring sound and shuts back off within a couple of minutes.  With loads, the fan slowly sped up to what I would call a medium speed, which was still bearable.

Inside the Power Supply:

* Taking this power supply apart will void the warranty.

Inside the power supply, there are three silver finned heat sinks that offer a sparse amount of fins to cool down the voltage rectifiers.  There are also two transformers, one large and one smaller transformer above it in the middle.

The Primary capacitor is Teapo branded.

The secondary capacitors are CapXon branded.

The fan inside is a Yate Loon fan which is somewhat common in FSP power supplies. It has the model number D12BH-12 with a draw of .30Amps.  It is a noticeably quieter fan than other 120mm fans.

Testing:

For this power supply, the test system consists of the following:

-Antec Nine Hundred Case

-Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Dual Core Processor @ 3.4 GHz

-ZeroTherm BTF90 Heatsink

-eVGA nForce 680i SLi Motherboard

-2GB (1GB x 2) of Mushkin XP2-8500 DDRII-1066 Memory

-320GB x 4 Western Digital 16MB Cache Hard Drives

-2x nVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS (G92) Video Cards @ 715MHz Core / 1000 MHz Memory

-Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital Sound Card

-Sony 16x DVD-RAM / 18x Samsung DVD-RAM Drives

-4x 120MM fans, 1x 200mm fan

-2x CCFL Lights

The results are great for this power supply. Everything ran fine during testing, the system was stable and performed the tests as expected.  During the tests, the fan speed varied from low to a medium-high speed.  After the tests completed, I noticed that the fan slowed down to its original startup speed and it even turned off after leaving the computer idle for a half hour! When the system is idle or doing simple tasks, the fan is off or running quietly and is not noticeable at all.  I was very satisfied with the noise characteristics during the testing. Installation of this power supply also went well.  Overall, the FSP Everest 80Plus 700 Watt offers  great performance, while keeping quiet.  This power supply would be perfect for anyone looking to build a dual/quad core system with up to two video cards, especially because it offers SLi certification for up to two NVIDIA 8800 GTS'.  It would also be great for anyone looking to build a quiet PC or a Home Theater PC where silence is needed.  Also, the modular connections are great for keeping the insides of the computer case neat and tidy.

Pros +

-Great power output

-Quiet 120mm Fan with SilentGuard (Fan stays off when load is <20%)

-Modular power connectors

-Up to a six year warranty

-Good Price ~$130

Cons -

-A pouch to carry unused cables is not included in this model of the Everest Series.
